Origin

America

This is quite a rare aquatic plant, native to America, that grows very slowly and stays low to the bottom of the aquarium. This is a rosette plant which has a very conspicuous, long stalked, male flower with 4 long stamens and between 1–4 female flowers at the base of the male stalk.

However, this plant will not flower whilst under water. Each rosette should be planted separately in the substrate of the aquarium a few centimetres apart.

The rosette will send out runners and in time a very characteristic carpet of fat fleshy leaves, each between 2–5 cm long and 0.1–0.3 cm wide will be created on that aquarium floor.

The leaves of this plant are flat on one side whilst rounded on the other and are spongy inside, with many small air spaces.
