This is an aquatic plant which is very unique and beautiful. It is also known as Alternanthera reineckii rosaefolia minor. It is native to South America, where it grows along riversides in areas that are flooded during the rainy season.
It is a hardy plant which grows slowly and compactly and is particularly suitable for small or medium aquariums where it can be planted in small groups in the centre of the aquarium or in the foreground of larger aquariums.
It grows to about 15 cm (6 inches) in height and has long leaves; the upper part can vary from sage green to brown, while the lower surface is purple-red.
Propagation is easily undertaken by cutting the top and side shoots and replanting in the substrate. Good light and CO2 will provide a colourful healthy looking plant.
