This is an aquatic wildflower which looks as if it floats on the surface of the aquarium. However, there is an underwater spongy stem and root system.
It has variable leaves that may submerge or float, and it can produce small violet or white flowers.
In the wild its habitat is shallow water in ponds and slow moving streams. It is a perfect plant for breeding aquaria where it provides protection for fry.
Propagation is easily undertaken by cutting off the lateral shoots and replanting them into the substrate.
