This plant produces a dense mat of thousands of small individual forked green shoots, which are shaped roughly like divining rods. This thalli colony, as it is called, can be manipulated into various shapes, and therefore there are many uses for this amazing plant.

The colour is a bright green that absorbs the light and sometimes seems to glow from within. It is natural for Riccia fluitans to “hook” onto projections and to one another – this is how it builds such impressive colonies. Attach the mass to an object with a fine net to create many shapes in the aquascape.

Allow it to tangle with Java Moss for a duplex look. Use it with craft mesh to form a ground cover.

Riccia fluitans is one of the easiest plants to grow, but watch that it doesn’t block light to plants beneath. It’s perfect for breeding fish and, if you allow it to, will grow to the surface.
