This plant requires high light and plenty of CO2 supplementation, which will result in this challenging plant thriving and displaying the reddish colouration and lemony smell that makes this herb a treat to keep. The natural habitat of this plant is swampy or boggy soil in Asia.

The narrow green leaves of this plant, which are purple underneath, are used as a spice in Thailand, especially in soups, and when mixed with hot water it makes an aromatic herbal tea. Propagation is easily undertaken by cutting off the tops of the plant and replanting straight into the substrate.

Care should be taken with the positioning of the new shoots to make sure that they receive enough light.
