The Mexican Blue Palm is a species of Palm Tree native to the Baja Peninsular in North America. It is a desert plant that can tolerate very hot days and cold nights and is frost resistant down to -10 °C (14 °F), so it is ideal for a British garden.
It is a slow growing plant that can reach 15 meters (45 feet) in height. The trunk is stout, about 45 cm (18 inches) wide. It can live up to 100 years.
The leaves are bluish and fan shaped, 1–2 meters wide (3–6 feet) and very striking. They look almost luminous in moonlight.
The small, pale yellow flowers grow on long spikes, which can extend up to 5 metres (15 feet) from the crown and hang down around the trunk.
The fruits are 18–24 mm long (about 1 inch), and look like brown eggs.
This is a tree grown for its striking foliage, which makes a spectacular display by day and night. It works well in a desert-themed garden.
