This is an undemanding, resilient and bountiful floating stem plant that grows up and covers the water surface. In the wild it inhabits wet and marshy environments.

It is very easy to grow and therefore extremely suitable for many aquarium setups. The alternate bright green leaves of this plant are edible and have a peppery taste. They are used as a spice.

When the plant reaches the surface it will produce small white flowers.

Propagation is easily undertaken by cutting or pinching off cuttings and then planting them straight into the substrate, where it should take root within a few days, as long as there are enough nutrients and lighting available.

This plant is a perfect plant for breeding aquaria where it provides protection for fry.
